World Geography
Grades 5-9
Mondays 9:00-10:25 a.m.
Overview:
This is a 30-week course. Working with the 180 Days Around the World approach of learning through exploring, we will travel our world’s geography. Starting with the world in which we are familiar, our state and country, and building out to the world at large, students will learn about the different types of geography (human, physical, and environmental) of each continent.
This course will also have a Tennessee State History component. Between each new continent of study, we will take some time to work on learning our state’s history and geography. Using many different resources, we will seek to gain a better understanding of the Volunteer State and its place in the larger story of America.
Grades: Grades will be given to parents at the end of each semester. However, we will be using an online grading platform that parents have access to and grades will be updated weekly. Parents and students are also encouraged to maintain open communication with Mrs. Halford and address any questions or concerns prior to the semester deadline.
Grading Scale:
90-100= A
80-89= B
70-79= C
60-69= D
0-59= E
Homework/Assignments: Choose from three different tracks!
Homework will be assigned weekly and students are responsible for the completion of the homework and turning it in each class session. An assignment schedule will be distributed monthly. Parents are encouraged to help students be accountable for completing the work. All assignments and grades will be updated weekly online.
Track A: Homework 2-3x per week
Track B: Homework 3-4x per week
High School Track: Students will be assigned homework and readings averaging 1 hour each day, qualifying them to count this course toward high school social studies credit. In this track, students will have a presentation component built into each continent’s unit of study.
Assessments (Quizzes): All assessments, both formal and informal, will occur during class time. Classes will often open with a short quiz from the previous week's material to jump start our discussion for the class that day. Quizzes will not be used as the primary form of assessment, as this class will be largely project-driven.
